Hello,
For a newsletter that focuses on presence in any given place, we’re sure that some of you may have noticed that we’ve been absent from your inbox over the last month or so. We’re sorry for the silence and that it has taken us some time to share an update.
When we started Place in May 2020, the world was very different. There was a lot of uncertainty and a lot of suddenly sitting still after our lives had been motivated by movement, travel and exploration. Place was born out of that space of surprise existence, where we were presented with the opportunity to reflect on our past experiences and what they had meant to us, as well as try to make sense of an unprecedented change in all our lives. It was meant to be a creative outlet, a challenge but also a question – were the things we thought about something that others would find compelling too?
Over the last two years, that has certainly proved true as we’ve built up readers, hosted writers and even collaborated with similar-minded people. We’re so grateful for this chance and for you being a part of that journey.
At the same time, life looks a lot different now. Our founding editors have gone from living in the same neighborhood to living on three different continents. We all have new jobs and new contexts in our personal lives. Life has gotten a lot more external. We got up from where we had been sitting and rejoined the world that inspired us in the first place. And for some time, that was compatible with our work on Place. However, we now realize that these new directions that our lives are taking us have become a priority.
With that in mind, Place will look a little different from now on – within the next few months Place will be going on hiatus as we can’t keep up the weekly commitment in the way we used to. We have a few exciting pieces in the pipeline from contributing writers as well as our own thoughts, and we’re hoping to make some sort of physical publication in the coming months to send to long time subscribers and as a memento of this project.
But ultimately we don’t know what it will look like in the future. We‘d love to keep it as an outlet for these sorts of reflections, our own and others, as well as maintain the archive. Beyond that, you may hear from us from time to time - a surprise letter, always a sign that we’re thinking of you.
In the meantime, we’ve paused subscription payments and any remaining money we have we are using 100% to commission pieces from emerging writers. So your contributions are being used for the mission that we set out in the first place - to support creatives who may not otherwise have a place to publish their non-news connected essays and work. And stay tuned — those will be hitting your inbox in the coming months.
It’s difficult to put into words how much Place has meant to us and that is so much in part thanks to the readers who have been in our inbox every week. We’re incredibly grateful that you’ve been here for this journey – if there’s anything you want to see from us in the coming months or the future do reach out.
Thank you once again. See you down the road.
-Karis and Kylee
